About the event

A Model United Nations that smells of salt and sand.

Une simulation des Nations Unies au goût d’océan et de désert.

Hassani dress in the desert near Dakhla

Mirage Youth Assembly brings roughly 100 young people to Dakhla for four days of committee work, negotiation and drafting. Half of the delegates come from across Morocco and beyond; the other half are students from Dakhla itself. That balance is the point: the coastline being debated is somebody’s home.

The sessions follow standard MUN procedure, but the assembly is dressed in Dakhla’s own culture — its Hassani hospitality, its lagoon, its fishing economy. Delegates debate in committee by day and meet the place they are debating about by evening.

Mirage is the closing chapter of MUN4SDGs, the Gold Valley MUN Club initiative that has promoted six Sustainable Development Goals across the season. Two remain, and they are the two that meet on this shore.

The agenda

Two goals, one shoreline.

Dakhla lives from the Atlantic and from what it takes out of it. Both goals are visible from the same beach.

SDG 14 — Life Below Water

Overfishing, plastic in the Atlantic, coastal habitats and the livelihoods that depend on them. Delegates will work on protecting marine ecosystems without switching off the economy that feeds the region.

Vie aquatique
SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production

Waste, tourism pressure, supply chains and what a growing coastal city does with everything it buys. Delegates will look at how consumption habits upstream decide what ends up in the water downstream.

Why Dakhla

A peninsula between a lagoon and the Atlantic.

Wind turbines on the dunes, camels on the sand, fishing boats on the water and a city growing fast between them. Dakhla is not a backdrop for these two goals — it is a working example of both, which is why the assembly meets here rather than in a conference hall.
